SisAdmin Recommended Datto Configuration
By Darrell Westerinen 5/15/14
This document guides you through the steps needed to configure a Datto BDR (Backup Data Recovery Server), with what SisAdmin has found to be their recommended Datto configuration. This is meant for the Siris product lines.
Datto Registration Page
The registration page asks for an email address. This email address is used by Datto as a point of contact when support needs to get in touch with you. No alerts are sent to the email address typed here.
Recommended: 60 minutes. Can stagger agents to every few hours if performance issues. Usually not necessary.
Intra Daily: 5 days
Daily: 2 weeks
Weekly: 2 months
Delete Offsite: 2 months
Note: No Data will ever be deleted until it is successfully replicated offsite regardless of settings here.
NEVER delete is recommended. This will keep ALL data in the cloud indefinitely.
SE10000 = offsite storage is double the local storage limit: 20TB.
If go over limit, will be charged for extra data. Datto will never delete the data without filling out form to delete data.
See data usage: Click Synchronize tab | Cloud Storage Usage
If approaching Cloud Storage Limit, then can start setting Offsite Retention to delete data older than X years or months.
Leave on default: Application Aware VSS with STC Fallback
Datto is application aware; It will truncate Exchange and SQL database logs. If application has data in memory — it will back up this data also.
STC fallback – This will only be used if VSS fails. STC is not as robust as VSS. No logs will be truncated, data in memory will not be backed up. Will get big red error on the agent if STC fallback is utilized. Fix VSS on the affected server in this event.
Click “Apply to All” on each section after getting all agents installed.
Secure File Restore & Export:
Not necessary to set up. Datto is already password-protected. Use this if you have multiple user accounts on the Datto and need to restrict access.
24 hours – recommended wait time to generate screenshots of images and email them.
Add wait time: 10 minutes (this will allow server image to finish booting to Windows login screen so screenshot looks more convincing that the backup image is good)
Error threshold: 28 hours (the more agents you have, the higher the threshold)
Weekly backup reports — consolidated to show all agents on one email.
Warnings/Alerts – sent real time.
Logs Digests – don’t send emails. Not useful.
VSS Exclusions: Don’t exclude any of these.
Share Compatibility Mode: Use for troubleshooting only. Mainly for older systems.
Write Caching – troubleshooting only. For old servers.
Virtualization Storage Controller – Leave default
Virtualization Core Components — Leave on Modern for Windows 2008 and most 2003. Change to Legacy for 2000 and some older 2003 systems.
Force Differential Merge:
Good for getting a full backup if backups missed for several days.
Safe to use whenever. Takes the amount of time a full backup takes but doesn’t take up the space a full backup image would.
Syncing to cloud
See Configure | Off-site Synchronization tab for these settings.
Important note: It’s by far the best to always have the Datto syncing 24x7x365. Even if it’s at 4Kbps during the day, the transfers won’t be interrupted mid-file.. Much more efficient.
Default Transmit limit: This is generally the speed used at night and off hours. Set this to about 75% of your available bandwidth.
Setup an offsite sync schedule to a lower speed for office hours (Example 9am-5pm M-F). Set this limit to be at most 50% of your total bandwidth. Lower it if users report sluggish internet connection.
Restore a file:
Restore | File Restore – browse to file you want and choose restore
Dismount restore points when done. If you don’t, this will prevent screenshots reports from operating.
You will need to install the Exchange Kroll Ontrack tool on a workstation to restore individual emails / mailboxes.
Advanced | Exchange
Activate 45 day license for Kroll — can continuously renew this 45-day license.
License count: Type in total number of Exchange mailboxes on the Exchange server. Again this is provided at no extra cost. It’s in the Datto contract.
Restore SQL database:
Use the File Restore
Recommend restoring entire volume that database is housed on. Can restore individual files also.
Another option is to use the Bare Metal Restore on the SQL server – this may be easiest.
With this configuration you also have the ability to spin up any image directly on the Datto. This is safe to do as a test anytime as long as you leave the network disconnected (via Datto settings) for the image you are spinning up.
Go to Restore | Local Virtualization to start.
